The Mushroom Houses

From the exterior, one might only wonder about the enchanting stories encapsulated within the Charlevoix Mushroom Homes. The four residences are all “influenced” by Earl Young, the renowned eccentric builder and architect celebrated for his mushroom-shaped, hobbit-inspired homes. The primary residence, known as The Thatch House, emerged from the original stone walls established by Earl Young.

The new owner, Michael Seitz, envisioned the home with a sketch on a napkin and invested almost two years in redesigning and finalizing it, particularly focusing on the expert timber craftsmanship and the signature thatch roof, which resembles the cap of a mushroom. This beautifully undulating roof is constructed from the highest quality natural thatch, hand-harvested in Europe and transported to the United States.

Inside, the residence boasts six bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, in addition to a media room and a cozy sitting area on the upper level. Additional features include a washer and dryer, under-floor heating, a spacious gourmet kitchen complete with full bar seating, and an outdoor grill. The home also accommodates family getaways, wedding receptions, and events of all kinds, consistently leaving visitors and guests with a magical experience.
